Description:
A two room building, the Fish Creek school is a single story, rectangular (56′ x 30′) structure constructed of untooled native stone laid randomly. The roof, covered with tin sheets, is hipped and a porch, supported by square columns on undressed and uncoursed stone, extends over the two-door, recessed entryway. Wood sash classroom windows that rest on cut stone sills extend to the eaves.
The school building is significant because construction of it provided work opportunities for unskilled and unemployed laborers in a rural and remote, coal mining community where there had been none and because the structure created a new environment conducive to learning for students previously confined to dilapidated wood structures. Architecturally the building is unique in the community because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship. Indeed, it is the only structure left in the immediate community.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Follow state highway No. 2 north of Kinta one mile to the Sans Bois road and go east four and one-half miles to the end of the road;go north two miles and west one mile to the SE corner of Sec. 15, T 8 N, R 20 E; from there go north 70 yards, west 125 yards, south 70 yards, and east 125 yards.
