Description:

The Hickory School Gymnasium is a single-story, rectangular (110′ X 80′) structure constructed of tooled and barely coursed native stone. The shingled roof is gabled and has two stone chimney stacks. Wood sash windows, placed by twos and on concrete sills, rise to the eaves. Entryways are recessed. An addition to the east end of the building, now in decay, and boards on some of the windows have not impaired the integrity of the structure, although its general state of disrepair has.
The gymnasium is significant in that its type, style, building materials and workmanship are distinctive within the community. Construction also provided jobs for the destitute during the depression, and the building itself helped to improve the quality of education within the Hickory school district.
