Description:
Originally a two class building, the old McCarty school is rectangular in shape (74′ x 30′) and is constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The roof is gabled, while on the west rear, wood sash windows, placed in sixes, rise to the eaves. The south entryway is recessed in an enclosed porch with a archway and gable roof; while the entry on the east front,
also recessed behind an archway, has been enclosed with a concrete block addition that houses bathrooms. The addition does not seriously impair the architectural integrity of the building.
Within the community the McCarty School building is architecturally unique in terms of type, style, materials and workmanship. Indeed, it was originally the only building. Secause the structure replaced primitive school facilities, it represented the genesis of modern education in the area-providing a physical surrounding conducive to the learning process. Most important was that the building, during the course of its construction, helped to alleviate some of the destitution of unemployed workers by providing job opportunities.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: From Elmore City go five miles east on state highway No. 29, turning north on a paved cuonty road and proceeding for one mile to the McCarty school building. It occupies a 208.75 square foot tract of land in the SE corner of Sec. 5, T 2 N, R 1 W.
