Description:

A building of twelve rooms, the school and gym building is a rectangular (120′ x 275′) structure of cut, coarsed, and rusticated native stone. The school’s roof is flat with parapets, and the gym’s roof is gable shaped with parapets. The front entry is recessed behind an archway. Some entrances to the building were constructed at a later date. Some windows have concrete cinder block inserts, and others have been painted blue. An addition has been added to the south side of the building. The alterations do not impeach the integrity of the building.
The school and gym combination is unique for its type, style, scale, and workmanship. The project provided badly needed work for destitute laborers and infused wages of some 118,900 man-hours of labor into the local economy during the height of depressed conditions. Educational opportunities in Pawnee were greatly enhanced as well.
