Description

Built of faced stone blocks and featuring an elaborate front façade with clerestory windows and ornate metal framing this built has severed as the county courthouse since 1935. Three double doors are separated by fluted stone panels on the front façade. Elaborately carved grey granite panels above each doorway complement the intricate metal tracery decorating the doors and windows of the front façade. The plain frieze of the front façade has raised lettering which reads, “POTTAWATOMIE COUNTY COURTHOUSE.” The building has a partial attic story which houses the jail. The main doorways are raised above ground level and are approached by a broad flight of granite stairs. Three carved medallions also decorate the large windows of the front façade. These carvings feature the head of an Indian, the scales of justice, and the head of a pioneer. The elegant lines of the structure give it a distinctly Art Deco style.
