Description:

A rectangular (70′ x 42′) addition to the east end of the Laundry building, the old Sewing Room is constructed of red brick laid with running bond. The roof is flat with parapets, while the walls are capped with cut limestone blocks. A frieze of vertical bricks is located just below the cap. Brick pilaster strips with a decorative concrete cap frame the entryway and accentuate the corners. A shaped lintel of poured concrete rests above the doorway, and metal casement windows rest on pre-formed concrete sills. The vertical lines of the structure suggest an art deco influence.
The Sewing Room addition is significant because construction of it provided needed employment for destitute workers long on relief rolls and because it is one of only a few WPAbuilt structures that had an architectural style common to industrial buildings. A part of a complex of buildings used by the state government as a “reform” school, it was also unique as a type of structure. As an addition to another building, it is not thought to be worthy of nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: The Sewing Room Addition to the Laundry Building is located on the grounds of the Pauls Valley State Hospital some four miles south of Pauls Valley on U.S. Highway 77 in the NW 1/4 Sec. 33, T 3 N, R 1 E.
