Description:
A single story structure with a flat roof and parapets, the Coweta City Hall is L-shaped (38′ x 64′, with an extension of 38′ x 20′) and constructed of uncut and unrusticated native stone. The mortar is slightly beaded. New metal sash windows sit on pre-formed concrete sills. Pilasters on each side of the front entry, set-backs on the front wall and angular extensions of the roof line give the structure a distinct art deco flavor. An addition for the fire station of materials identical to those used in the original building and enclosure of some rear windows with native stone do not impeach the architectural integrity of the structure.
The clear allusion to art deco style makes the Coweta City Hall relatively unique for a WPA building. And within the community the structure is notable for its type, style and workmanship. The importance of the building to the city is suggested by the fact that it remains in use. Especially significant is that construction of the municipal building provided needed jobs for individuals left without work because of the extent of the depression and infused wages for some 22,000 man-hours of labor into the local economy.
