Description:
Designed as a one room facility, the Oak Grove school building is a single story, rectangular (28′ x 45′) structure constructed of uncut and unrusticated native sandstone pieces randomly laid. The roof, now covered by composition shingles, is gabled, and the front entryway sits beneath a gabled porch supported by wood shafts on pedistals of native stone. The west window opening, which reaches to the eaves, has been reduced in size with wood inserts and new metal sash windows installed. On the rear has been attached a concrete block shop building and passageway to additional living space. The alteration has impeached architectural integrity of the building.
The structure.is unique as a WPA-built one-room school house in that the principal entrance is at the end rather than on the side of the building. It was especially important in that the facility provided, for the first time, a progressive environment supportive of education in an agricultural region that was fairly isolated. Construction of it, of course, offered employment to laborers who had been without jobs since early in the depression years.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go east of Broken Arrow on 71st street four miles into Wagoner County, then two miles north and 1/2 miles further east. The Oak Grove school building is on the north side of the road, on property described as the east 208.71′ of the south 208.71′ of the S 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 26, T 19 N, R 15 E.
