Description:
A single story, rectangular (40′ x 79′) structure, the Wagoner City Hall is constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. Pattern courses are either recessed or extended, giving the exterior walls a “tailored” look, a look enhanced by pre-formed concrete lintels and caps. The roof is flat with parapets. Window openings on the sides have been enclosed with wood inserts, while those on the front have been reduced in size by the same technique and casement, single pane windows installed. Over the front entryway has been added a flat-roof porch, and on the rear has been attached a concrete block room addition. Fortunately, these alterations have not impeached the architectural integrity of the structure.
The Wagoner City Hall is significant because it reflects the wide range of projects undertaken by the WPA and its method of operations. City halls were considered “useful” projects, just like schools and armories. And rather than begin construction anew, in the instance of Wagoner the WPA began with an old structure and “reconstructed” it. Put differently, the agency tore down an old building and built a new one in its place. Within the community, the building still serves as “City Hall” and is unique architecturally in terms of workmanship. And the “reconstruction,” of course, provided jobs for those made destitute by the national depression and infused wages from some 40,000 man hours of labor into the local economy.
