Description:

Measuring 60 feet by 79 feet, the Whitehead gymnasium is constructed of poured concrete, now painted white. Pilasters on the exterior walls give decorative relief. The roof is gabled, and the windows, with pre-formed concrete sills, are of the metal casement variety. The vertical lines of the building and the squared arches of the two front entryways give the structure a faint art deco flavor. Unfortunately, additions have been made to three sides of the structure, the cumulative effect of which is to impeach the architectural integrity of the gym.
SIGNIFICANCE: 1938-1939; architect/builder: unknown
The art deco style and the poured concrete construction make this building significant architecturally for a WPA building. It is totally unique within the Whitehead community as well.
