Description:
This two room, single story, rectangular (36′ x 50′) building is constructed of uncut native stone of buff and auburn colors in a masonry of random rubble. The roof is both hipped and gabled with a gable dormer window. The main entrance is accessed through a portico. The sash windows are by fours on the east and west sides and contain concrete sills and reach to the eaves. The windows on the north and south ends have concrete lentils and sills. An additional doorway has been added, as well as a concrete block addition on the north side. These alterations do impair the integrity of the building.
This school is significant because it constituted an economically important community resource. Its construction provided local families with wages from some 16,000 man-hours of labor which were infused back into the depressed local economy. Jobs generated by the construction of the school restored a sense of pride to many men who might otherwise have been unable to provide for their families. Architecturally, the school is a rich example of WPA vernacular style, especially unique within the Cole community.[1]
