Description:
A two classroom, single story structure, the Javine School building is rectangular (35′ x 87′) with offsets and constructed of dressed but randomly laid native sandstone. The roof is gable with steps, and a cross gable, supported by four wood shafts, extends above the porch and recessed double door entry. There is an external as well as an internal chimney. Windows on the east have been enclosed with wood inserts, while window openings on the west, which extend to the eaves, have been enclosed with concrete blocks. The latter alteration diminishes but does not destroy the architectural integrity of the building.
Located in an area of intensive agricultural activity, the Javine school district suffered considerably from the national depression of the 1930s. Construction of the building provided WPA job opportunities to laborers who had been driven to dispair by their inability to get jobs and to provide for their families. Most important is that the building became a center of community activity as well as educational opportunity. Architecturally, the Javine school is wholly unique in the area in terms of type, style, materials and workmanship. Indeed, it is virtually the only public building left in the community.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Follow state highway No. ’20 west of Skiatook two and one-half miles, the school property, on the NE corner of the intersection, being two acres in the southwest corner of Sec. 20, T 22 N, R 12 E.
