Description:
A single story, rectangular (38′ x 53′) structure, the Tulsa Animal Shelter is constructed of rusticated and randomly laid native sandstone. The roof is gabled, and metal casement windows rest on pre-formed concrete sills. On the front is a single doorway and a double-door garage, while on the north side are five, two feet high openings for animal runs to exterior pens.
As a WPA structure, the Tulsa Animal Shelter is significant because it is the only known one of that particular type. It also suggests the varied character of the projects undertaken by the agency: to provide shelter to animals was also useful. Construction of the shelter also provided job opportunities to those unskilled laboreers who had been made destitute by the depression and who still found themselves unemployed by late 1939.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Situated in north Tulsa, from a point 416 feet east and 832 feet north of the southwest corner of the SE 1/4, Sec. 8, T 20 N, R 13 E, fo 208 feet east, 208 feet north, 208 feet west and 208 feet south.
