Description:
A building of fifteen rooms or more, the Stigler grade school is a single story, L-shaped (207′ x 56′, with a 77′ x 56′ extension at the angle) structure constructed of poured concrete slabs. The roof is flat with parapets; the windows are metal casements; the front entryway is decorated with offsets. Painted white, the building has a strong art deco stylistic quality.
As a WPA school building, the structure is notable for its clear stylistic allusion to art deco, its use of poured concrete slabs for construction material, and its scale. It suggests the relative “prosperity” of urban school districts as opposed to those in rural areas. Within the community the building is unique architecturally because of its style and workmanship. The school building is particularly significant because its construction created work opportunities and some economic security for unskilled and unemployed laborers in the Stigler area, especially coal miners, who had been economically devastated by the depression. It also created an environment more conducive to learning.
