Description:
The Lamar gym and auditorium is a single story, rectangular (111′ x 63′) structure with offsets constructed of rusticated and crudely coursed native sandstone. Now covered with composition shingles, the roof is gabled with a step; the entry facade constitutes a cross gable with a recessed door. Above the doorway is a poured concrete slab. Window openings, with pre-formed concrete sills and lintels, have been covered with sheet metal, but this alteration does not impeach the integrity of the building.
The gym and auditorium is significant in that workers and families in the Larmar area were saved from starvation by being given the opportunity to work on it and because it provided space for school and community activities, especially basketball, which fostered a sense of identity and pride not widely known in the region earlier. Within the community the structure is unique because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship.
