Description:
The old fire station in Shawnee is a single-story, essentially square (42′ x 42′) structure constructed of yellow brick. The shingled, hipped roof has an intersecting center gable in front. A garage door framed by curved pedistals, that was located under the center gable has been enclosed with wood siding, as have been adjacent doorways. The metal sash windows have concrete sills.
This fire station was built to meet a need of the city of Shawnee at a time when city funds were low. By cooperating with the federal government, the city of Shawnee was able to build the fire station at less cost to the city. It is significant that the construction of the fire station provided jobs for many men who were unemployed and unable to feed their families. The project created a structure unique in type, style, and workmanship
