Description:

A single-story structure, the Durant city jail is rectangular (26′ x 36′) and constructed of large, poured concrete blocks painted white. The flat roof has parapets, and windows are singly placed with smaller ones located to the rear. Pilasters on either side of the front doorway and a horizontal frieze at the top of each exterior wall hint at art deco style.
As a WPA structure, the Durant City jail is unique in type and materials. Within the community the building is notable because of its allusion to art deco style, its type, its materials and its character of workmanship. Its real significance lies in the fact that construction of the jail provided employment for destitute workers on relief, giving them an income that prevented starvation.
