Description:
The Mead gym and auditorium is a single story, high ceiling, rectangular (115′ x 68′) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The roof is arched with parapets; windows, with continuous sills and lintels on the front, are metal encased. An extension from the front facade enclosed the main entryway. Some window openings have been closed with plywood sheets, but the architectural integrity of the building remains intact.
Architecturally the gym/auditorium is unique in the community because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship. It is also significant because construction of it permitted unskilled and unemployed agricultural laborers in the Meade area to have work where none had previously existed and because it provided a place for school and communitywide activities, especially basketball competition. The latter fostered a sense of identity and pride not widely known in the region earlier.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: From where Church Street intersects U.S. highway No. 70 (the SW corner of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 30, T 6 S, R 8 E), go east 208.71 feet to a point of beginning, then go north 298.71 feet, then east 135.71 feet, then south 298.71, and then west 135.71 feet.
