Description:

The Lone Grove gym is a single-story, rectangular (100′ x 67′) structure constructed of cut and rusticated coarsed native sandstone. The roof is arched and has parapets. The front of the building, which is visible as an interior wall because of an addition to the front of the structure, is constructed with very large stones. Windows are metal casement over a lower portion of opaque panes. There is also an addition to the rear of the structure. The additions do impair the visual integrity of the structure.
SIGNIFICANCE: 1940; builder/architect: unknown
The Lone Grove gymnasium is significant in that it has provided facilities for the physical development along with the development of leadership skills and pride in community for many Lone Grove children. Testament to the pride of workmanship of the WPA, the structure is still being used as a gym. Its construction provided much needed employment for many distressed laborers suffering from the economic Depression. Within Lone Grove the structure is distinctive for its cut stone walls and for its style and type.
