Description

The Walters Herald – Apr. 4, 1940
Walters residents will soon realize that the city hall project is more than a dream. Developments this week give assurance that construction on the $21,000 structure will being within the next few days, with the starting date likely April 12. Months have been necessary to make all the arrangements for the building through the Work Projects Administration, and presidential approval was given at the turn of the year. When completed the building will house all city offices, and will replace the old structure which had fallen into decay.

The Walters Herald – Oct. 3, 1940
City officials again have a home they can call their own. Without any preliminary fanfare, workers started Monday morning moving office equipment of the city manager and city clerk, as well as of the library, and installing it in place in the recently completed city hall. With only a short delay business was conducted as usual in the new offices, and customers of the municipality’s utilities were able to pay their bills without delay. The city jail, which has been ready for customers more than a week, has yet to furnish a confining influence for anyone charged with violating the ordinances on the city’s books. The construction project, operated through the cooperation of the WPA, has furnished employment for a number of workers since it was started last summer.

This building is still standing and owned by the City of Walters, although hasn’t been the city hall for many, many years. The library expanded into that area vacated by the city hall offices, but it was moved to a new location about 10 years ago. The north end of the building was the fire station. A new one was built a number of years ago. That area is now used by the city for a maintenance shop. The front part of the building was being used as a Food Closet, but I don’t think it is being used now.[2]
