Description:
This square shaped (34′ x 34′) single story building with sublevel is constructed of uncut, randomly laid native stone with beaded mortar. The roof is gabled with projecting eaves. The front entryway is recessed behind a portico which serves as a vestibule. Double-hung wooden sash windows are singly placed with concrete sills. Hopper windows serve to illuminate the sublevel. There is a concrete belt course which separates the sublevel from the rest of the facade. A wooden annex has been built onto the building’s east side which destroys its integrity.
This school is significant because it constituted an economically important community resource. Its construction provided wages for some 13,200 man-hours of labor for local families which were infused back into the depressed local economy. Jobs generated by the construction of the school restored a sense of pride to many men who might otherwise have been unable to provide for their families. The school served for many years as an educational facility for children of the community. This structure is unique for its sublevel design, indeed it may be the only one of its kind in Oklahoma.[1]
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go 3 miles north of Welch on U.S. highway 59, then east 3 miles, then 1 mile north to a part of the SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 11, T 28 N, R 21 E, described by beginning at the SW corner of said SE corner and running north 208.71 feet, thence east 313.06 feet, thence south 208.71 feet, thence west to 313.06 feet to the place of origin.
