Description:
This gymnasium is a single-story, rectangular (80′ x 50′) structure constructed of uncut native stone of auburn and buff colors with masonry of random rubble. Pilaster strips are along the walls and in the corners and are made of cut and rusticated stone. These pilaster strips hint at an art deco style of architecture. The roof is arched and has parapets. Some window panes are painted; sills are concrete. The south side entry is covered by a concrete addition. These alterations impeach the integrity of the building.
As a WPA project, the gymnasium is unique in terms of style, type, materials, and workmanship. The placement of the stones enhance the artistic workmanship done by the unskilled workers. Building the gym gave destitute workers useful employment and some economic security. At the same time, the project added education to the Kellyville community.[1]
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Lots 3, 4, and 5 of Block 25, Kellyville original, specifically, beginning at the south end of Elm street, go 40 feet east, then the gym goes 40 feet north, 50 feet east, 80 feet south, 50 feet west to the point of beginning.
