Description:
The WPA addition to the Kansas High School is rectangular (33′ x 24′) and constructed of limestone blocks randomly laid. The masonry is rather crude, although the mortar is beaded. The addition has a gable roof with projecting eaves; window openings on the south reach to the eaves and contain cut stone sills; the single door entryway is asymetrically placed on the end facade. A rain porch has been replaced my a metal awning. The WPA structure was attached to the east end of a 1924 building.
The WPA addition to the Kansas High School is significant primarily because it today symbolizes in a vernacular architectural form an enlightened social policy of the federal government that placed greater emphasis upon the conservation of people than upon the conservation of a particular economic system.[1]
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: The addition is situated in Blocks 22 and 23, of Kansas original plat, and in the SE 1/4 of Sec. 13, T 20 N, R 23 E.
