Description:
he Douglas Cemetery entrance consists of two red brick columns with concrete caps on either side of a metal/wire hinged gate. In addition, a metal rectangular sign above the entrance identifies the property as “Douglas Union Cemetery.” The entire entrance occupied an area approximately 13′ x 6′. The integrity of the improvement is intact.
The erection of an entrance to the Douglas Cemetery provided a much-needed civic improvement to the community during the Depression. In addition to stimulating local pride, the project created temporary employment to jobless laborers. As a WPA project, the Douglas Cemetery entrance is significant as an example of the cemetery improvement program conducted in the 1930s. Within the community, the cemetery entrance is unique for its type.[1]
