Description:
Originally a two-room building, the Yanush school is a single story, rectangular (30′ x 70′) structure with an offset and is constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The roof, covered now by sheet metal, is gabled with one step; two of three doors are recessed behind archways. With concrete sills, wood sash windows on the east reach to the eaves.
The school building is significant because construction of it generated an enthusiasm for learning in a rural and remote region that previously had little interest in the world at large. Records suggest that many of the students were Choctaw Indians, a conservative people. Hard hit by the depression, the area and destitute laborers were saved from economic ruin by the job opportunities provided by the school construction project. Architecturally the buidling is wholly unique in the community because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship.
