Description:

The Heavener library building is a single story, rectangular (58′ x 30′) structure constructed of uncut and uncoursed native stone of multiple colors. Now covered with composition shingles, the roof is gabled, with an intersecting cross gable extending over the front entryway. On the west end is an external chimney. The one-half size windows sit on continuous sills and are divided by round columns of rusticated stone. The latter touch, along with the selection and placement of stone, demonstrate a mature and high quality workmanship.
As a WPA structure, the Heavener library building is unique because of exceptional workmanship demonstrated by the stone columns dividing the windows and the colorful arrangment of construction materials. As much as any other, it reflects the improved skills over time of WPA directed labor forces. Within the community itself it is significant architecturally in terms of type, WPA style, materials and character of workmanship. It is especially important because construction of it provided needed jobs for destitute laborers at a time when no work meant virtual starvation.
