Description:

The old Powell Schoolhouse was originally a single-story, rectangular (70′ x 28′) structure constructed of slightly tooled, and coursed, native stone. The hipped roof has a cross gable that extends over the recessed front entryway. The rear windows have been altered with wood insets to create smaller windows, and one sash window in front is completely covered by a wood inset. The windows all have concrete sills. A concrete block addition to the north end of the structure and installation of roof dormers have impaired the architectural integrity of the building.
The old Powell Schoolhouse is significant in that its construction provided work for many oil field workers and farmers affected by the depression. It also provided an environment conducive to learning for many children in the area. Architecturally the building is notable for its type, style, materials, and workmanship.
