Description:
The Chouteau Grade School is a four room, single-story, rectangular (56′ x 200′) building made of cut, coarsed, and rusticated native stone of buff and auburn colors. The roof is flat with parapets. The entryway is recessed behind a brick archway that contains rock pilasters and a rock stepped cornice. The east side of the building has paired and singly placed windows with continuous brick sills. The west side of the structure contains paired and singly placed windows with continuous concrete lentils and sills. The top portion of the west side is constructed of brick. Metal framed windows and several painted panes have been added. There is a 1955 brick addition on the north side and a gym addition on the west. Unfortunately, these alterations do impeach the integrity of the structure.
This school is significant because it constituted an economically important community resource. Its construction provided local families with wages which were infused back into the depressed local economy. Jobs generated by the construction of the school restored a sense of pride to many men who might otherwise have been unable to provide for their families. Architecturally, the building is unique in terms of style, type, materials, scale, and workmanship.[1]
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: From the intersection of Harrison and McCrackin Streets go north 255 feet, west 75 feet, south 255 feet and east 75 feet in the SW 1/4 of Sec. 24, T 20 N, R 18 E.
