Description:
This WPA school is a single-story, rectangular (64′ x 36′) building constructed of cut, coursed, and rusticated native stone of buff color. The roof is gabled with a large center gable that extends over the entryway. The main entrance is on the southeast corner and is recessed beneath a cross gable and has concrete steps. The windows contain partial wood inserts. The roof has wooden shingles and some tin. These alterations and general deterioration impeach the integrity of the building.
Building this school meant greater educational opportunities for children in this remote and rural area that did not exist before. It gave employment to destitute laborers badly in need of some type of economic security. Architecturally, the school is unique in scale as a rural school and in terms of type, style, materials, and workmanship.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go south of Welty on highway no. 48 one mile, then east on county road 1 mile to the school site on a 2 acre tract: beginning at the SE corner of Sec. 9, T 13 N, R 9 E, go north 3 1/3 chains, west 6 chains, south 3 1/3 chains, and east 6 chains.
