Nuyaka School Campus (Two Bldgs) – Okmulgee (Vic)

The Nuyaka School Campus contains two WPA structures. The Nuyaka Bus Garage is a rectangular (32′ x 50′) structure constructed of coursed and rusticated native stone of buff color. The roof is gabled and is presently covered with red tin. The garage openings have been filled in with brown painted wood. Small windows and two doors have been inserted. Small rain awnings held up by poles were also added to the garage openings. The two small window openings, with concrete lentils and sills, on each end of the building have wood inserts with more energy-efficient windows added. These wood alterations do not impeach the basic architectural integrity of the structure.
The gymnasium/auditorium is a single-story, rectangular (75′ x 84′) building constructed of coursed and rusticated native stone of buff color. The roof is triangular in the center and flat on each side. All parts of the roof have parapets. The entryway is recessed behind a square archway constructed of concrete. The doors are slightly recessed behind this. The window openings have been filled in with brown painted wood, and smaller, more energy­efficient windows have been inserted. All trim has been painted brown, including the concrete lentils and sills on the windows. The alterations do not impeach the integrity of the building.
Construction of these buildings gave badly needed jobs to destitute laborers at a time when few such opportunities existed in this rural and remote area. It allowed the WPA to infuse wages of some 82,000 man-hours of labor into the local economy. Completion of these WPA projects created a new environment that enhanced educational opportunities in the area. Another WPA built school burned down and the gymnasium/auditorium was converted into classrooms and is now the main school building on the campus. The bus garage was later converted into classrooms and is still an important part of the school. Architecturally, these structures are unique in terms of type, style, scale, materials, and workmanship.

VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go west of Okmulgee on highway no. 56 some 10.5 miles then go north on county road 2 miles to the school site on Lots 1 through 31, Block 20, Nuyaka Original.
