Description:
The old school building at Harjo is a single-story, rectangular (84′ x 30′) structure constructed of untooled and uncoursed native sandstone. It has beaded mortar, an arched roof with stepped gables on the ends only, and sash windows with concrete sills. The southwest side has been altered with sliding glass doors replacing the original garage door entry.
This school building is most notable for its unique style (especially stepped gables), type, and materials. But more significant is its workmanship. Labor was furnished from the ranks of the unskilled and unemployed suffering from the economic depression. The construction of the building provided an income for these men and a fine building for the school. (Yet it is not absolutely certain that this is the WPA building on the Harjo school campus.)
