Description:
This project involved the reconstruction of older structures associated with the Shawnee Indian Sanitarium. It consisted of removing the third floor and rebuilding the first and second floors. The structures are constructed of brick laid on top of a sub-wall of native stone. The roofs are flat with parapets; the windows are singly placed; the entryways are framed by jambs and lintels of cut limestone, further decorated by a pediment.
This reconstruction is primarily significant because it involved the Bureau of Indian Affairs, a federal agency responsible for the welfare of Oklahoma’s Indians. Other than the federal fish hatchery at Reagan, I know of no other building projects by the WPA that involved federal agencies. These two buildings are also excellent examples of three story buildings, common of the 1920s, cut down to two story structures.
