Description:

The old Tecumseh High School Gymnasium is a single-story, rectangular (94′ x 69′), wood frame structure with clapboard siding and a gable roof. Sash windows are placed high on the walls of the structure, and the double door main entry has a stoop protected by a small gable porch roof. A large metal addition has been built onto the south side of the gym, but the integrity of the building is still intact.
The Tecumseh gym is significant because of its wood frame and clapboard siding. The WPA built several similar structures, but this one is one of the few that remains. Because it is an example of a type of a building now virtually extinct, it is worthy of recognition on the National Register despite the fact that the metal addition that covers one entire side affects its architectural integrity. It is also significant in that construction were provided jobs for destitute laborers and in that it permitted students a physical education facility that encouraged intervarsity sports and community pride.

VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: A tract five feet north, east, south and west of the north, east, south and west walls of the gym centered upon the above referenced UTM, situated on the line between Blocks 20 and 21, Tecumseh original.
