Description:
The old McKey school is a two room rectangular shaped ( 73′ x 28′) structure of uncut and uncoursed native stone. The masonry is superior. The hipped gable roof has a center gable which forms a triangular pediment supported by two sets of columns surrounding the recessed front entryway. A single wooden door entry with hood and stoop is located on the rear of the structure. The windows on the front facade are paired double-hung wooden sash with cut stone sills. Two sets of windows combined into bands rest on the rear and hopper windows are found on the sides of the building. A small bell tower is located just north of the school building. Two pairs of windows on the front of the building have been replaced with energy efficient wood insets and a concrete block addition has been built onto the south side of the structure.
The wages for some 15,000 man-hours of labor paid for the construction of this building and infused back into the community provided economic stimulus to the depressed local economy. The sense of pride that developed as a result of providing employment which allowed local men to feed and clothe their families is reflected in the fine quality of workmanship exhibited on this building. The fact that the WPA choose to construct schools is evidence of its commitment to the future of this country.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go five miles east of Vian on U.S. highway 64, then 1.5 miles north to a point 208 feet south of the northeast corner of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 29, T 12 N, R 23 E, then west 208 feet, south 208 feet, east 208 feet, and north 208 feet.
