Description:
A high ceiling, rectangular structure (108′ x 58′), the Liberty gym is constructed of uncut and unrusticated native sandstone laid with a cobweb pattern. Exterior side walls have pilasters. The roof is arched, with parapets, Window openings have pre-formed lintels and jambs and are enclosed with steel encased glass panes. Unfortunately, either concrete block and uncut native stone additions have been made to three sides of the structure. These alterations have impeached the basic integrity of the building.
Situated in the southern portion of Tulsa County, the Liberty community found the WPA-constructed gym a boon both to its educational program and civic pride. The structure constituted the first indoor sports facility in the area and enabled the school to participate in inter-school competition. Construction also provided work opportunities for unemployed laborers who had been made destitute by the national depression.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: The gym is located on 5 acres in the SE, SE, SW 1/4 of Sec. 8, T 16 N, R 13 E, being .60 miles west of the intersection of 201st street and Harvard Avenue.
