Description:
A single story, L-shaped structure (44′ x 36′ horizontally, and 38′ x 28′ vertically), the Coweta Negro school is constructed of uncut and unrusticated native sandstone. The roof is cross gabled with intersecting valleys. The front entryway is covered by a gabled porch supported by pipes. Window openings have been enclosed with wood inserts. Unfortunately, the exterior walls–even the window inserts–have been sprayed with a stucco material and painted pink. The alterations has affected the architectural integrity of the building.
The building is significant, in addition to the fact that it provided jobs for black unemployed workers during the depression, primarily because it was a black school and represented educational opportunity for black students who heretofore had little if any opportunity.
