Description:
Designed as a two room facility, the Sunnyside School building is a single story, rectangular (28′ x 72′) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone, now painted white. The roof, now of composition shingles, is hipped, but a centrally placed cross gable covers the recessed two-door front entryway. The west window openings, which reach to the eaves, retain their original wood sash windows. On the east rear has been attached a stucco building with a sheet metal addition to it, both of which cover completely the original structure.
SIGNIFICANCE:
In a strictly agricultural community, the construction of the Sunnyside School facility meant jobs for workers long unemployed as a consequence of the depression and the drought. Equally important was that the building provided a modern environment supportive of real educational development among an isolated people. Within the community, the structure was totally unique in terms of type, style, workmanship and materials.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go east of Broken Arrow on 71st street seven miles into Wagoner County, then one mile south. The Sunnyside school building is on the northeast corner of the interesction on property described as one acre in the SW corner of Sec. 8, T 18 N, R 16 E.
