Description:
This WPA grandstand has bleachers and a dressing room underneath. This room is no longer in use. The grandstand is a rectangular ( 111′ x 26′) structure constructed of coursed and rusticated native stone of buff color. The risers are made of concrete and there are 12 tiers; all of which has been painted yellow. The doors and windows of the dressing room have been filled in with cinder blocks. Hand rails have also been added. These alterations do not impeach the integrity of the field and grandstand. A newer grandstand has been added directly across from the WPA structure and is not a part of this nomination.
The football field and grandstand at Beggs are significant because construction of them gave badly-needed employment opportunities to destitute workers in Beggs. This project also benefited the local community by infusing wages of some 41,400 man-hours of labor into the local economy. Recreational opportunities were enhanced and contributed to heightened morale among the people living in Beggs. Architecturally, the grandstand is unique within the area in terms of type, style, scale, materials, and workmanship.
