Description:
A single-story building, the Broken Bow City Hall is irregular shaped with its main portion measuring 44 by 45 feet and an adjacent wing measuring 35 by 19 feet. It is constructed of unrusticated and uncoursed native sandstone. The roof is flat with parapets, while wooden sash windows are singly placed. The double door entryway, decorated with stepped pilasters and a pediment, as well as horizontal friezes above and below the windows suggest an art deco influence. A concrete block addition on the rear of the building and an adjacent but unattached structure on the side have not impaired the architectural integrity of the city hall.
Its type, art deco style, materials and character of workmanship make the Broken Bow City Hall unique along “main” street and within the community. Moreover, the WPA did not build all that many city halls in southeastern Oklahoma. The structure is especially significant in that construction of it provided jobs for unemployed lumber jacks and unskilled agricultural workers at the point in the depression when few existed.
