Description:
A four room building, the Hoyt school is a single story, rectangular (75′ x 45′) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The hipped roof, covered now with composition shingles, has a gable dormer without lights above the front archway to the recessed doors. Doors on either end are also recessed behind archways. Classroom window openings reach to the eaves; the wood sash windows, resting on concrete sills, are original.
The structure, replacing one condemned as unsafe, is important because it created a new enthusiasm for learning in an area that suffered from educational disinterest. Architecturally the building, still in use as a community center, is unique in the area because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship. The school building is especially significant because construction of it provided work opportunities for unemployed farmers and coal miners in the rural community of Hoyt who had been made destitute by the depression.
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Situated on the southeast corner of the Hoyt community, the property line begins at the NW corner of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 9, T 9 N, R 19 E and runs east 118 feet, south 370 feet, west 118 feet, and north 370 feet.
