Description:

The Keota gym and auditorium, which also contains classrooms, is a two story, rectangular (84′ x 70′) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The roof, covered with composition shingles, is gabled with a catslide on the north; windows are metal casements. A concrete block addition has been attached to the west side, and a lean-to shed had been attached to the south. Neither of these alterations affect the integrity of the building.
The gym/auditorium is significant because it provided space for school and community activities, especially basket ball competition, which fostered a sense of identity and pride not widely known in the region beforehand. It is important too because construction of it provided work opportunities for destitute coal miners and tenant farmers in the Keota area who had long been on relief rolls. As a WPA gym and auditorium, the structure is notable for being two stories. Within the community the building is unique architecturally because of its type, style, scale, materials and workmanship.
