Description:
The Leon School consists of a schoolhouse/auditorium with a combined gymnasium. It is a single-story, rectangular (119′ x 90′) structure constructed of brick. The gym has a gable roof with catslide, while elsewhere the roof is flat with parapets. Windows are sash and have brick sills. Pilasters are used for decorative relief and frame recessed entryways. A small wellhouse addition has been built on the north wall of the gym, and an additional classroom wing has been added to the south end of the building. The west wall of the gym is constructed of concrete block and appears to be a later addition. The alterations impeach the integrity of the building.
The Leon School is unique in type, style, scale, materials, and workmanship. Its construction provided much-needed jobs in an area where the traditional job market had virtually closed as a result of the depression. This project has played a significant role in the educational development of Leon and the surrounding area.
