Description:
Attached to a previously existing school building, the Mutual Gymnasium/ Auditorium is a rectangular (70′ x 100′) structure constructed of coursed red brick. The roof is arched with parapets. Windows are single spaced with concrete slip sills. An addition has been attached to the northwest side of the building. This addition and the attachment to an older building detracts from its architectural integrity.
Construction of the gymnasium/auditorium saved unskilled and unemployed laborers in the Mutual area from economic deprivation by providing temporary jobs during the Depression. Also, it fostered a sense of identity and pride in the community by providing a building for school and community activities. The construction of the school provided an educational center still in use today. As a WPA structure, the building is notable for its scale, type, workmanship, and construction materials. Within the community, the structure is unique in terms of its style and scale.[1]
