Description:
This school of two rooms is a single-story, rectangular (54′ x 25′) building of uncut native stone of auburn and buff colors. The masonry is random rubble. The roof is gabled with a center gable over the entrance. The entryway door is recessed behind an archway. The side door has a concrete lentil. The back windows and one on the front have been filled with partial wood inserts. The back windows reach to the eaves. The alteration does not impeach the integrity of the building.
This school is notable architecturally, because of the strategic placement of the different colors of stone that make a unique and beautiful design. The workmanship, style, and type also make this school one of a kind. Construction of it provided work for many unemployed men in the area, while infusing wages of some 20,000 man-hours into the local economy. Through this project the WPA provided for new and badly-needed educational opportunities in this drought-stricken area.[1]
VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: Go south of Lenna on county road 1 mile then west 1/2 mile then south 2 1/4 miles to the school site, which is on a 2 acre tract in the SE corner of the NE 1/4 of Sec. 24, T 10 N, R 14 E.
