Description:
A multi-purpose facility, the Stigler Community Building is a single story, L-shaped (35′ x 79′ with a 36′ x 14′ extension) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The roof, now covered with composition shingles, is hipped with an intersecting gable and valley. A small gable porch covers the main entryway, and wood sash windows are placed singly and by twos. The window sills are of pre-formed concrete. On the wing there is an exterior chimney.
The community building is significant because it provided a gathering place for the Stigler community where activities occurred that engendered spirit and pride, an outcome sorely needed during the dark days of the depression. Architecturally it is remarkable in terms of type, WPA style, materials and character of workmanship. Also construction of it provided work opportunities for unskilled and unemployed laborers, primarily coal miners, who had faced previously the prospect of starvation.
