Description:
The Stigler gym and auditorium, with classrooms, is a single story, rectangular (83′ x 86′) structure constructed of rusticated and coursed native sandstones, many of which are black. The roof is arched, except for over the classrooms where it is flat. Suggesting art deco influence, parapets and pilasters decorate the structure. The east entryway is recessed behind an arch. The panes of casement windows have been painted white, an alteration that does not impeach the integrity of the building.
The gym/auditorium is significant because unskilled and unemployed laborers, especially coal miners, in the Stigler area were given work opportunities during the course of construction. It also provided space for school and community activities, especially basketball, which fostered a sense of identity and pride not widely known in the region earlier. Within the community the structure is unique because of type, style, scale, materials and workmanship.
