Sewing Rooms were set-up to provide jobs for female bread winners during the New Deal.  A sewing room opened in Crescent in 1939.   On March 14th and 15th, 1939, an “open house” was held for a WPA exhibit in the sewing room on the second floor of the Bank of Crescent.  Another project provided training for 32 women in household management, home care and first aid.  After their training, graduates were sent to families where the housewife needed assistance due to illness or age.
