Description:
A single story, rectangular ( 41′ x 98′) building, the Industrial Arts Building is constructed of undressed and untooled native sandstone. The roof is gabled, and the door is covered with a small shed-like roof supported with decorative wood braces. The metal casement windows that rise to the eaves sit on pre-formed concrete sills. To the south end of the building has been attached an addition of sheet metal siding. Fortunately, this alteration has not affected the essential integrity of the structure.
The Barnsdall Industrial Arts Building is significant because it demonstrates the varied nature of educational structures constructed under the WPA program. Moreover, vocational education facilities were relatively rare, with most resources going into class or gymnasium buildings. Architecturally, the structure is unique within the community in terms of type and workmanship. It is especially important because it helped to put unemmployed oil field laborers to work at meaningful labor at a time when they had been without economic security for as long as five years.
