Description:

Set into a hillside, the Bowlegs Football Stadium is rectangular (242′ x 228′) and is constructed of poured concrete and framed by walls of rusticated and coursed native sandstone. The stands rise in five tiers and have entryways at either end. Centrally located in the stands is a rectangular dressing room with a concrete slab that serves as a roof and additional seating. Another dressing room is located at the east end of the stadium, its concrete roof serving as a bandstand. A recently added press box has not compromised the architectural integrity of the facility.
The Bowlegs School stadium was one of at least three major construction projects on the campus. Two others constituted additions to pre-existing structures (a vocational education building and an auditorium). The stadium is the only facility that stands independently and demonstrates the full measure of WPA workmanship–destitute and unskilled laborers doing quality work on useful projects. Within the community the football stadium is unique in terms of type, style and materials. Statewide it demonstrates the broad range of construction activities sponsored by the WPA and acknowledges that agency’s recognition of the importance of recreation in community life Construction also provided jobs for destitute workers.

VERBAL BOUNDARY DESCRIPTION: The stadium is on the edge of Bowlegs on property that begins 570 feet west and 429 feet north of the SW corner of Sec. 22, T8N, R6E, and goes east 292 feet, north 292 feet, west 292 feet, and south 292 feet.
